Madcap first appeared in Captain America #307 (July 1985), and was created by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary. Madcap is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Telling your readers that they should be thankful to players like that is, in my opinion, reprehensible.Madcap in Ghost Riders: Heaven's on Fire #4 (November 2009). "Rules lawyering" is not the same as technically-sound play - it's when someone's an outright asshole to their opponent and tries to manipulate the situation into giving them some slight edge, generally by rushing their opponent or badgering them. I strongly disagree with that's being implied here. But if they insist that you abide by your words, that no take backs are allowed, and that the letter of the law is followed, you should be thankful for their honesty. If someone argues with a judge that you deserve a severe penalty for a minor infraction, that can be unsporting. When you mock someone as uptight or unfriendly when they call out a minor technicality, you are helping to create the climate that allows cheats of opportunity to exist. Someone who insists on adhering to technical play is creating a better tournament environment, long-term. The pejorative “rules lawyer” is unfortunately pervasive in our community.

Worst that'll happen is that everyone present will go away knowing one more rule :) If you spot anything like this, even if you might just have a hunch that something dodgy is going on, its important to speak up. For example, asking for the target of a ] before deciding whether to counter the mage. I've also seen/heard of people who know exactly how cards work try to manipulate the opponent, who may be less confident of their own rules knowledge, to gain an advantage. Fortunately for me I'd spotted exactly what happened (gave the benefit of the doubt until blocking was declared) and to make it even easier there were no spirit token generators in his graveyard or exile :P He "accidently" knocked the stack, moving cards towards the battlefield, then next turn claimed to have a spirit token in play to block otherwise lethal damage. Opponent had his SB and stack of tokens next to his deck. I've almost fallen victim to not having a clear table before. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
